A 37-year-old Portage man is facing criminal charges for his alleged role as the driver involved in a fatal crash, Michigan State Police reported.
Police identified the lone passenger killed in the crash as 30-year-old Evangelina Alvarez, of Kalamazoo.
Troopers were called around 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, to investigate a one-vehicle fatal crash along I-94 in Calhoun County’s Marengo Township.
Police said the Portage man was traveling westbound on I-94 when he lost control of his vehicle and went off the road, crashing into a tree. The man suffered minor injuries.
Alvarez died while being transported to an area hospital, police said.
Police arrested the Portage man on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice.
MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette is not naming the man pending arraignment in court. As of Sunday, Feb. 26, the man remains in the Calhoun County Jail on charges related to the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
